Abu Asim Azmi is the MLA from Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar and serves as the President of Samajwadi Party Mumbai and Maharashtra Pradesh. He is widely regarded as a strong grassroots leader and a consistent voice for the underprivileged, minorities, and marginalized communities.
Born in 1955 in Azamgarh to Haji Niyaz Ahmed Azmi, he comes from a humble family background. Raised among seven brothers and three sisters, his early life was shaped by values of compassion, discipline, and social responsibility. He is married and is blessed with six children—five daughters and one son.
He completed his schooling in Azamgarh, including his education at Madarsa Islamiya Bagh Meer Pethu and Wesley Inter College. He later moved to Aligarh for higher studies and pursued Commerce at Aligarh Muslim University.
In 1973, he moved to Mumbai, where he built a successful entrepreneurial journey. He is the proprietor of Abu Travel Service, a well-established multinational recruitment company, reflecting his strong business acumen alongside public life.
His political journey began with a deep commitment to social justice, especially after witnessing the emergence of communalism in Mumbai after 1992. He joined the Samajwadi Party and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming Mumbai President in 1995 and Maharashtra President in 2004. He served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2008.
The year 2009 marked a historic turning point in his political career. Abu Asim Azmi became one of the rare leaders in Maharashtra to secure a double victory in a single election, winning from both Mankhurd–Shivaji Nagar and Bhiwandi East constituencies. He chose to represent Mankhurd–Shivaji Nagar, which has since become his strongest political stronghold.
Since then, his journey has been defined by uninterrupted public service and consistent electoral success. He was first elected as an MLA in 2009 and went on to retain the trust of the people with consecutive victories in 2014 and 2019. In the 2024 elections, he once again secured a decisive win, further reinforcing his image as a committed “Kaamdar” leader who delivers on the ground.
Apart from politics, he is deeply engaged in philanthropy through the Niyaz Ahmed Minority Welfare and Education Trust. His initiatives focus on education, healthcare, and social welfare, including running schools, medical centers, mobile health services, and clean water projects for underserved communities.
